Pantomime in Venice

For out European friends, we have a special treat coming this January 2012 in Venice, Italy.

Don't confuse English Pantomime with French mime. It is a musical-comedy theatrical production usually performed just around Christmas time, where adults perform for families. With extravagant costumes, great music, audience participation and sing-a-longs, it's great fun for kids and adults, whether they speak English or not.

Pantomime in Venice is a group of English-speaking expatriates and Venetians who pantomime to raise money for charity. They are all volunteers – the actors, stage managers, scene builders and painters, etc. Under the lead of the renowned author Laurie Graham, who writes their wonderful scripts, their fifth pantomime will follow in the successes of Aladdin in 2002, Mother Goose in 2007, Dick Whittington in Venice in 2008 and Cinderella in 2010. This year's show in 2012 will mark the debut of their new director, Frank O'Halloran, and it will be a wonderful production of Sleeping Beauty (she falls asleep in 1878 and re-awakens in 1978 in the midst of the disco era, imagine that!). As always, the shows will be free to the Venetian public. They simply ask that contented spectators make donations as they leave....

This year has been chosen as the charity that will receive the donations!

It will be held at the Teatro A L'Avogaria in Dorsoduro on January 12, 13 and 14. So, mark your calendars!
